Katherine Johnson was an American mathematician whose calculations of orbital mechanics as a NASA employee were critical to the success of the first and subsequent U.S. crewed spaceflights. She was known as a "human computer" due to her skills.
Lewis Howard Latimer
Lewis Howard was an inventor and a patent draftsman. He is best known for his contributions to the patenting of the light bulb and the telephone. His inventions included an evaporative air conditioner, an improved process for manufacturing carbon filaments for light bulbs, and an improved toilet system for railroad cars.
Garrett Augustus Morgan, Sr.
Garrett Augustus was an inventor, businessman and community leader. His most notable inventions were a three-position traffic signal and a smoke hood (a predecessor to the gas mask).
Granville Tailer Woods
Granville Woods was an inventor who held more than 50 patents in the U.S. He was the first African American mechanical and electrical engineer after the Civil War. One of his notable inventions was a device he called the Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph.
